Greywater 101: What You Can (and Can't) Safely Reuse
Every gallon that goes down a drain in a house isn't the same, even though it all disappears into the same plumbing. Greywater reuse starts with understanding that distinction, because what's safe to redirect toward a garden bed is very different from what belongs firmly in the sewer or septic system.
Greywater versus blackwater
Greywater generally refers to relatively clean wastewater from showers, bathtubs, bathroom sinks, and the clothes washer. Blackwater refers to wastewater from toilets, which carries pathogens that make it unsuitable for any kind of casual reuse. Kitchen-sink and dishwasher water occupy a middle ground that most general homeowner guidance treats more cautiously than shower or laundry water, due to food grease, oils, and higher organic loads that can clog irrigation lines and attract pests if reused untreated. Because of that, most simple residential greywater systems — the kind a homeowner installs without a full treatment plant — are built around showers, bathroom sinks, and laundry, and specifically exclude the kitchen sink, dishwasher, and all toilet water.
How much greywater a typical household actually generates
Using typical fixture assumptions, a household of four showering once a day for 8 minutes at 2.1 gallons per minute, using bathroom sinks for a couple of minutes a day per person, and running about four laundry loads a week at 25 gallons each, generates somewhere in the neighborhood of 85-90 gallons of greywater a day from those combined sources. Not all of that ends up usable, though — simple systems lose some water to filtration, plumbing runs, and a reasonable safety margin, so a realistic planning assumption is that roughly 90% of generated greywater becomes usable, closer to 80 gallons a day for that same household. What greywater is generally used for
The most common and widely accepted use for residential greywater is subsurface or mulch-covered irrigation of ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees — not lawns in most guidance, since lawns are typically irrigated by spray, and greywater is generally not recommended for surface or spray application because of the risk of human contact and because standing greywater can develop odor and bacterial growth within as little as 24 hours. Direct irrigation of edible crops, particularly the edible parts of vegetables that grow at or below soil level, is also generally discouraged or restricted in most residential guidance, due to the risk of pathogen contact with food.
Simple laundry-to-landscape systems — where a washing machine's discharge hose is redirected, often through a diverter valve, to a mulch basin or drip line serving trees and shrubs rather than the sewer — are among the most common entry points into greywater reuse, since a washing machine's own pump can push water some distance without additional plumbing.
Why storage is the wrong instinct
A common misconception is that greywater should be collected and stored the way rainwater is, in a barrel or tank for use whenever convenient. In practice, most guidance recommends using greywater promptly — often within a day — rather than storing it, precisely because it isn't as clean as rainwater and can quickly develop odor and bacterial growth if left sitting. A system that routes greywater more or less directly to an irrigation area as it's generated is both simpler and safer than one built around holding tanks.
Check before you install
Greywater reuse rules vary enormously by jurisdiction — some areas permit simple laundry-to-landscape systems with few or no restrictions, others require permits, specific subsurface irrigation methods, or minimum setback distances from property lines, wells, and buildings. This is general homeowner guidance, not a substitute for checking with your local building or health department, and any system involving cutting into existing drain plumbing is worth having reviewed or installed by a licensed plumber familiar with your local code.
